Bronchial Artery Embolization for Moderate to Massive Hemoptysis

Massive hemoptysis is a serious condition requiring urgent treatment. Despite advances in surgical and medical management of hemoptysis, it is still a major cause of morbidity and mortality. People have proposed various definitions for massive hemoptysis, the most acceptable being expectoration of 240ml blood in 24 hours [1]. In 90% of cases, significant hemoptysis occurs from bronchial artery [2]. Because the surgical mortality rate in emergency situations is around 40%, bronchial artery embolization (BAE) has emerged as good alternative for management of hemoptysis [3-5].
